Duchy New Packaging
July 21st, 2009
Duchy Originals was launched in 1990 by the Prince of Wales, after he had converted his Home Farm in Gloucestershire to organic production. In 1992, the first Duchy product, the Oaten biscuit, was launched and there are now more than 200 Duchy products. The old (and for many products, existing) packaging is strong in itself, but the new packs, which feature an image depicting a wood etching of the Duchy Home Farm, reinforces the firm’s origins and philosophy. The new packaging also gives greater prominence to the ingredients and provenance of the products.

Top 20 Organic Products
December 5th, 2007
Once upon a time, the Prince of Wales wanted to turn the oats produced at his Highgrove Farm into organic cookies. Prince Charles looked far and wide for the best cookie- maker in the land, and at the factory of the winning confectioner, Walkers Shortbread, staff tinkered for 18 months to perfect the recipe for a crispy texture and refined taste. In 1992, these cookies marked the beginning of Duchy Originals, which now also sells other organic products.

Top 20 Organic Products
December 5th, 2007
Traditional pasta manufacturers mix their flours. Not so at the Italian pasta-producer Valentino Felicetti. Riccardo Felicetti, Valentino’s great-grandson and chairman of this 100-year-old family firm, says making organic pasta takes more care—and yields a better result. “If you mix flour, it is nearly impossible to trace its origins. And if, like us, you want to make organic pasta, it is particularly crucial to know exactly where the grain comes from and how it was grown. We made a choice to maintain short lines of communication with our grain manufacturers. We looked for regions that are best suited to produce the grains we like to work with: durum wheat, spelt and kamut. Then we looked into the best way to make pasta while maintaining the characteristic flavour and quality of every type of grain. The result is a perfect pasta that can be directly traced back to the farmers and the land that supplied the grain.”

Selezioni
November 16th, 2007
Kamut has a big chewy kernel, rich taste, is higher in protein and vitamins than regular wheat and is grown organically in Alberta and Saskatchewan, making the latest darling of the health food scene. Production of this ancient variety of wheat is limited to small areas of the world... much of the Canadian harvest is shipped to Europe. The raw grains can be cooked and added to soups and salads.

Dufflet in NYtimes
October 24th, 2007
Over the years, friends have indulged me with boxes of excellent pastries and confections made by Dufflet of Toronto. I also found them in shops in other Canadian cities. Recently, a package of Dufflet bittersweet chocolate crackle beckoned from the shelves at Eli's Manhattan. On the company's Web site, dufflet.com, the crackle is aptly described as being based on the classic Florentine cookie. In addition to the bittersweet with toasted almonds, there are two other flavors: bittersweet with maple and cashews, and milk chocolate with toasted hazelnuts. They are all best kept under lock and key.
